Yearbook Introduction
​and Media Use

Editor/Advisor Parent Meeting....Coming Soon!
Welcome to Introduction to Yearbook Production.  We are looking forward to an exciting year.  
We will produce the Lakeview Academy Middle School. 
This course is designed to develop students’ skills in yearbook production by providing experiences in selected aspects of yearbook production.  Students learn basic principals of yearbook production and develop skills that include writing copy, captions and headlines; digital photography; desktop publishing and using appropriate technology tools for media production.


The school yearbook will be completed by March. During the remainder of the school year, the students will learn more graphic design and photography skills.

Yearbook Production supports student’s development as writers, photographers, editors, independent users of technology and as responsible contributing members of the Lakeview Academy Middle School community.


Requirements:
Attend classes as scheduled (on time)
Complete yearbook activities as assigned
Turn in all assignments (on time)
Meet yearbook publication deadlines
Have a positive attitude toward learning
When absent, it is the student’s responsibility to complete missed work


All school and track rules, procedures, and grading policies apply in this course.


Please note that yearbook staffers may be asked to spend extra time during lunch, before and after school, and during intersessions to help the publication meet the strict deadlines set by the publisher. (very rarely!)

Parent and Student Introduction to yearbook



Congratulations on being the parent of a staff member selected for the 2018-2019 yearbook staff. Producing a quality school yearbook is a big task. We will be getting off to a strong start this year. Here are the highlights.
  • All students are actively gaining design knowledge for completing professional layouts and spreads.
  • We have completed a rough outline of the contents of our book.
  • We have discussed and chosen our yearbook theme.
  • We have assigned teams and rolls for each staff member.
  • Tasks have been divided between our teams.
As parents, you play a vital role on our staff. It is important that you understand what the staff does to produce the yearbook so that you can support your son/daughter during the process. Here are the highlights of yearbook production:
 
Budget
We are responsible for planning a budget for our book, buying supplies, and making decisions about our yearbook design that fit our budget. We take in a lot of money from our customers… We owe them a quality product! Students must be good business managers as well as journalists.

Deadlines
We have two deadlines to the yearbook plant.
  1. January 9, 2019
  2. February 28, 2019
I will have one mini deadline
  1. December 13, 2018
At each deadline, we must submit a certain number of pages of the book ready to be printed. (Not every student will have pages assigned to all deadlines. Their will be an assignment sheet to categorize what pages fall under which deadlines.) 

Making the Yearbook
How do we make the yearbook?

  • Determine a theme, logo, opening, closing and divider design.
  • Assign Editors, staff and teams.
  • Design the cover and end sheets to fit the theme.
  • Determine how the theme will carry over through the book.
  • Decide what stories to cover on each page and lay out the ladder.
  • Determine headline, body copy and cation fonts and styles for each section.
  • Determine which pages will be submitted at each deadline.
  • Assign coverage to each team and staff member.
  • Design layout of every page.
  • Take photos, conduct interviews, do background research. Conduct surveys.
  • Write stories and captions.
  • Input copy and digital images into Jostens’ online yearbook website.
  • Hand crop and label photos.
  • Check all copies including spelling of names.
  • Check and correct pages.
  • Submit pages’ plant.

Grades
A staff member’s grade in yearbook is based on
  • Acquisition of new skills (demonstrated through projects, assignments and page production) (20%)
  • Completed pages (assessed according to established journalism standards) (20%)
  • Time spent at school working on yearbook-related activities, (good use of class time) (30%)
  • Reliability at meeting deadlines (30%)

Staff Organization
Our staff will consist of 3 editors-in-chief and 3 co-editors. They each have been given a team of student who make-up our business managers, layout managers, photo librarians, photographers and designers. Each team is given specific sections of the yearbooks and staff positions will be assigned based on interest, skill and need. However, all staff members will work together on production, so everyone will get experience in all areas.

Time Commitment
Production of the yearbook takes considerable time inside and outside of class (during school, before school, during lunch, after school and occasional weekends) Depending on deadlines, Student might be asked to work after school on specific Wednesdays and Fridays. (Again, this is very rare)

Skills
Your staff member will have many opportunities to learn a variety of skills. Among them are:
  • Elements of layout and design
  • Computer Maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Conducting valid surveys and polls
  • Organization
  • Copywriting (application of all writing skills…organization, detail, sentence structure, etc.)
  • Basic use of Adobe Photoshop, Gimp and other computer design software.
  • Interviewing (really the art of conversation with people you don’t know)
  • Use of Jostens yearbook Avenue as a page layout tool
  • Time management
  • Basic Photography
  • Sales
  • Stress Management

Advisor Roles
As the advisors of the yearbook, these are my roles. You can depend on me to:
  • Teach staff members the skills they need to produce a quality book
  • Coordinate aspects of yearbook production
  • Provide a “safety net” for staff members in completing their work and getting it submitted
  • Communicate with parents and students about meeting, deadlines, emergencies, etc. (There are occasional events that pop up without warning that will need coverage. Please communicate with your staffer days that are better than others for help when making quick decisions.)
  • Be as flexible as possible in working around students’ other commitments
  • Have high expectations for staff members.

Parental Assistance
We need you. Please let me know if you can provide the following services:
  • Camera (if staff member forgets to check one out or if we don’t have enough camera for all events scheduled that day.)
  • Provide transportation when possible to and from school and perhaps away sporting events to allow staff members to get special training, cover special events and sports, and work on their assignments.
  • Communicate with your staff member about appointments you have made that involve him/her. This will avoid scheduling conflicts.

_____ 2. I understand that my child will need to devote time outside of class to the completion of assigned tasks relating to yearbook production.
_____ 3. I understand that if my child is absent, he/she must make up all work assigned. In the case of absence before a deadline, my child is accountable for arranging for completion of necessary work on time.
_____ 4. I understand that my child’s grade will be based on the quality of work produced for the yearbook, participation in yearbook activities, reliability on campus, and on meeting deadlines. All students are expected to take responsibility for the yearbook.
_____ 5. I understand that my child will need to devote time outside of class to complete assigned tasks. This time will be before and after school, or occasionally weekends. I will assist my child in managing school and home activities to accommodate his/her responsibilities to the publications staff.
_____ 7. I understand that the yearbook is a business as well as a class, and my child will be responsible for promoting the sale of the yearbook.
_____ 8. I understand that if my child does not meet deadlines or impedes the work of yearbook production by repeated inappropriate behavior, I will be asked to attend a conference attended by parent, student, adviser, counselor and/or administrator.
