What is our Graphic Art Class about?

Students will be introduced to the field of commercial arts and advertising design, focusing on graphic design, stop-motion and illustration. Topics to be covered in this course include safety, color and design, traditional studio art techniques (drawing and painting), computer technology (Word, Gimp, Adobe Photoshop Elements ), post-secondary education options, career exploration, entrepreneurship, and customer service.

Objective

This course is for the High School Visual Arts Core Curriculum. CAEM is an overview of traditional art media and new electronic art media used in modern communications. With an emphasis on studio production, this course is designed to develop higher-level thinking, art-related technology skill, art criticism, art history, and aesthetics.
Students will be evaluated on all projects through consideration of several factors: working within the parameters of the assignment, participating in classroom discussion, meeting deadlines, designing projects to reach a standard of visual communication and accomplishment as well as working to achieve personal management goals.

Your First Job!

Students will be prepared for the primary career of Graphic Designer because they will have designed many of the most common forms of visual communication as accepted in the industry. The skills and knowledge gained from this program will enhance the students’ preparation for the following career pathways: Illustrator, Art Director, Fashion Illustrator, Film Editor, Cartoonist, Scanner Operator, Product Designer, Technical Illustrator, Sign Maker, Interactive Media Developer, Display Designer or Animator because all these pathways require a basic understanding of the principles and practices of commercial art and graphic design.

What we will accomplish this year.

Project topics include:
• Advanced Advertising Design Theory
• Advanced Gimp, Photoshop, Stop-motion and Illustrator Software
• Internet and E-Mail Mentoring
• Collaborative Team Advertising Projects
• Final Portfolio

Lecture and demonstrations, along with classwork and homework projects/works of art, are designed to develop necessary skills and work habits. Students are expected to develop independent study habits, as well as a business-like approach to problem solving and completion of the projects/works of art.

Class Goals!

 • use the elements and principles of design to explore compositional problems, while developing the   required skills for layout and graphic design with various print formats.
• develop a basic understanding of creative concept to produce imaginative works of art based on  individual understanding and group ideas, as well as the comparison and contrasting of symbolism used in works of art from different cultures and time periods.
• learn and develop a basic proficiency in Gimp, Photoshop, stop-motion and  Illustrator software.
• learn about the Internet and other forms of modern technology.
• acquire an understanding of the advertising business, including basic business procedures, imaginative   group art work, professional requirements for success, and career opportunities.

the importance of procedures.

Classroom procedures are a crucial part of art classes. With out proper care and respect for the procedures, the functionality would be broken.
All procedures are taught continuously through class management and all students are expected to follow and repeat procedures as they are given. These procedures are necessary to insure safety for all, material care, respect for all, time management and cleanliness.
Thank you for understanding how important this procedure is!

hOW WILL MY PROJECTS BE GRADED?

50% of your grade is for completed assignments, 40% of your grade is for good use of time spent in class and 10% of your grade is for participation, preparation, and material care.

pROJECTS THAT NEED MORE TIME

If your project requires more time after its due date, you are welcomed to 1 full week extra time. After the extended full week, I will start taking 3 points per week, until the project is turned in.

The best way to avoid this, is to stay on task during class time and ASK for help when you feel behind.

Last Chance dates

Our class will have two "last Chance" days, per quarter, to get any missing work turned in. After these dates, there will be no acceptance of missing work that preceded it. Additionally, work turned in on a "Last Chance" day are still subject to my late work policy (left)

Utah Visual Art core Standards

The standards organize the curriculum into manageable and related units and guide the student through a rich experience with art. Each standard is broken into objectives, each objective into indicators. The individual core courses are presented in a portfolio format to facilitate student progress and to encourage the support of parents, teachers, and classmates. Listed below are all the visual art objectives (excluding Film Making). Each course includes the objectives relevant to its focus and provides indicators to detail the emphasis indicated in the course descriptions that follow. There are additional, elective courses such as AP Art History and Studio Art available in many schools. Computer with art/graphic software, color printer, image projector and appropriate new technologies are required for Visual Arts Courses.
