Art Foundations

What is Art foundation?

Art Foundations is a lively, inviting, comprehensive course written for beginning level artists. This course includes interactive activities and multicultural studio projects representing a wide variety of cultures, artistic styles and art media. This course is designed to enrich the lives of its participants through discovery and creative problem solving. It provides students with a broader perception of their environment and cultural perspectives. The course was designed around the following key concepts:
Picture
• Meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that allow for personal growth and creative expression
• Integration of aesthetics, art criticism, art history, and studio production
• Sequentially planned experiences that build on concepts and provide learning opportunities that incorporate a variety of media, artistic styles and historical periods

What will we accomplish this year?

Students will...
• be able to talk about works of art and learn basic skills and knowledge necessary to communicate in each art form.
• learn the elements and principles of art
• work with various media
• evaluate the work of master artists
• develop an awareness of an appreciation for the presence of art both within the classroom and everyday experiences
• will create studio projects and participate in studio activities that give students the opportunity to create works of art using various media and techniques
• review works of art from various periods, styles, and cultural groups to develop a broad base that celebrates cultural diversity and an understanding of global views
• explore, theorize and apply principles of aesthetics and art criticism to their own artwork and the artwork of their classmates
• form an appreciation of and a satisfying experience in the arts

Utah State Visual Arts Core Standards

Throughout this course, students will keep a sketchbook and develop an art portfolio featuring selected works of art. In addition, students will self-examine completed works in an effort to foster a sense of accomplishment and commitment to high standards of art production.

The importance of procedures

Classroom procedures are a crucial part of art classes. With out proper care and respect for the procedures, the functionality would be broken.
All procedures are taught continuously through class management and all students are expected to follow and repeat procedures as they are given. These procedures are necessary to insure safety for all, material care, respect for all, time management and cleanliness.
Thank you for understanding how important this procedure is!

No cell phones!

This year, Art class will be a phone free class. We have access to laptops and Ipads all year long. Let's use the resources we have been gifted and show the school how much we appreciate the support!

How will my art be graded?

60% of your grade is for work completed during class, 20% of your grade is for your portfolio (see #4 below), and 20% of your grade is for participation, preparation, and material care.
During our drawing class we will be compiling assignments and projects. At the end of the class the student artist will be making professional and presentable portfolios. The portfolios will be graded based on presentation of work, completion of work and the improvements of techniques. **I’d like make aware that I don’t grade by “how good or realistic the drawing is,” I grade on improvement, participation, and follow through. If you are truly trying and participating, improvements happen naturally and won’t have to be forced! A piece of work becomes “good” or realistic because of the multiple improvements (as in plural) you make as you progress from one assignment to the next. Your follow through is like throwing a ball or swinging a bat; to get the most out of your hit and if you want it to see success you need to FOLLOW THROUGH to the end!

Projects that need extra time

If your project requires more time after it's due date, you are welcomed to a full week extra time. After the extended full week, I will start taking 3 points per week, until the project it turned in.

The best way to avoid this, is to stay on task during class time and ASK for help when you feel behind.
Last Chance Days
Our class will have two "last Chance" days, per quarter, to get any missing work turned in. After these dates, there will be no acceptance of missing work that preceded it. Additionally, work turned in on a "Last Chance" day are still subject to my late work policy (left)

Always remember when your in class!

Respect for ourselves, others and materials. There is a high standard set on each class as they are using classroom materials and observing other students art work. Everyone is to be respecting and courteous at every moment, of every day. Not just respect for others, but there should be respect for us and our art. Certain procedures such as set-up and clean-up will be explained every day to outline the responsible and respectful actions we all will take when using the materials. Most materials will be used by all K-9th art students, and we at Lakeview Academy would like the materials to last their full life potential and possible more. If you are not sure how to use certain material and/or are not sure the proper care, please ask before using them. To avoid mistreating of material, make sure you are only using the material outlined in the object lesson of the class. Repeated disrespectful and irresponsible use of materials will reflect in your overall grade. Students will need to compensate for higher quality materials.
We will be following the Lakeview Academy discipline policy as outlined in the parent handbook. You will be expected to make art that is “E” rated, for EVERYONE. No violent images including knives, guns, blood, or inappropriate images or cartoons, etc. A good rule of thumb; if you have to question it at all, don’t draw it at all.

    Disclosure Agreement Form

When I fill out and submit this form, I am agreeing to have read and understanding the classroom disclosure. I understand Mrs. Beck's policies and procedures for the classroom.
